Cipher Security ModuleTM
The Cipher Security Module is a magnetic stripe reader assembly designed to replace the conventional mag-stripe reader that is resident in all point of sale systems.
The module can be provided as a "designed-in" OEM component or as a "plug and play" retro-fit assembly that is compatible with virtually any terminal deployed worldwide over the last 10 years.
The module itself is a FIPS architected design, providing physical security to the same standard usually found in much larger, network-based HSM's.
In this sense, we often refer to the module as a "mini-HSM", not only for its physical security, but also for the fact that it functions as a stand-alone key encryption module.
The module is made up of a proprietary dual gap head design, electronics, and proprietary ASIC all integrated into a tamper-proof assembly.
Its form factor is not radically different from conventional magnetic stripe readers, enabling it to fit into a very large number of new and installed payment terminals.
Within the ASIC's firmware are a set of security applications that essentially turn the module into a very powerful computing platform.
These security applications make up the Cipher Applications Suite, and include powerful tools for data encryption, card authentication, and real-time security reporting.
The purpose of the Cipher Security Module is to provide a definitive set of security solutions at the precise point in the payments network where card data enters the system.
This security platform - at the "edge" of the payments networks - is, we believe, the most efficient and practical means of securing card data available in the world today.
